Lynn Lieberman-MOMA-Untapped Cities-Contributor Profile-AFineLyne

This week we profile Untapped Cities contributor, Lynn Lieberman, the artist behind AFineLyne who has covered New York City locations as diverse as the Poppenhusen Institute where Boardwalk Empire was filmed, Gilda’s Club and the restoration of the Salmagundi Club for the arts in Greenwich Village.

What’s your “day job”?

I am an artist with clients ranging from shops and restaurants to hotels, churches and owners of townhouses.  Between assignments, I enjoy painting watercolor maps and streetscapes mostly in Harlem where I live and in Greenwich Village where I lived for many years.

Favorite piece you’ve written for Untapped:

I’m drawn to the history of our City and very much enjoyed the research done for the Andrew Freedman House in the Bronx.  What made that post special to me was that once I walked through their doors, a much different story emerged.

What’s the most surprising and/or valuable thing you learned  as a contributor?

Putting a magnifying glass to our City in a way that makes you look up and under, invites you – and takes you to places you never knew existed – all within a subway ride.

What’s your favorite Untapped place you’ve visited while traveling? Where do you want to visit next?

I would have to say that the medieval village of Eze in the mountain located on the French Rivera is my very favorite Untapped place.

What’s your favorite obscure fact about your city?

There is a 102 step spiral staircase inside the Washington Square Arch that opens at the top with a clear view north and south.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Sail from Bermuda to New York on a 40′ sailboat

What are some of your favorite websites?

BlouinArtInfo, Mother Jones, Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York,  Harlem+Bespoke and Untapped Cities of course.
