Don’t be daunted by the cold weather! Bundle up and head outside for performances, tours, and the quirkiest holiday markets you’ve ever been to, all inside one amazing city.

Monday, December 8th

In a response to the recent police shootings in the U.S., Willing Participant (with members fro Elastic City) will be leading a “disarm,” a performance that peacefully engages New York City police officers in a dialogue. The performance begins at 7pm at the SE corner of 49th Street & 6th Avenue in Manhattan. More information is available here.

The Van Alen Institute will be kicking off “Elsewhere,” a week-long program of performances, screenings, discussions and interactive tours that discuss the idea of “escape” in an urban environment. The first event will be held at the Anthology Film Archive on 32 Second Avenue, which is hosting “Get Lost!,” a presentation of “a collection of cinematic love letters to New York” from three filmmakers: Jonas Mekas, Robert Frank, and Manfred Kirchheimer, all European immigrants. Tuesday, December 9th

Nitehawk Cinema’s Christmas Vacation Film Feast will take place on the 9th and 10th, pairing food and beverages with the holiday classic.
The Van Alen Institute will be hosting a discussion called “Influx and Exodus: Two Conversations on Urban Density,” which will bring leading minds in urbanism to discuss the question: “How can city infrastructure and policy keep pace with the dramatic shifts brought on by rapid growth and decline?” Get your tickets here.

Wednesday, December 10th

Thursday, December 11th

The Van Alen Institute will be hosting “Ultimate Exit: the Architecture and Urbanism of Tech-Secessionism,” a live interview series and multimedia installation of a new movement towards “city-state-like sites escaping state jurisdiction” by companies such as Google and cloud-based communities.

Friday, December 12th

The New School will be hosting the event “City of Cities,” a series of presentations, conversations and performances all centered around “New York’s pulsating population, exploring both the conditions that shape its tidal surges and the personal narratives that result from increased-mobility and migration.” Find more information here.

Saturday, December 13th

The Morbid Anatomy Museum is hosting its Annual Holiday Fair, with specimens on sale such as human teeth, taxidermy, and antique medical equipment. The Fair begins December 13th at 12 pm. Check out our Top 10 Must Visit Alternative Holiday Markets.
The Etsy Holiday Handmade Cavalcade is a biannual Craft Fair In NYC, organized by DIY company Etsy New York, and features the unique handmade gifts of local Etsy Shops. December 13th and 14th from 10am to 8pm. 75 Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th Street.

Sunday, December 14th

The Van Alen Institute will be finishing its week-long program with two events: a walking tour of Highbridge Park led by urban planner Moses Gates, and a presentation at the Institute’s location by six top designers to “consider escape in and around New York and develop new routes and experiences.” More information is available here.
