Although it certainly doesn’t feel like it, spring has finally arrived! In anticipation for the warmer weather (fingers crossed), New York City is playing host to a variety of activities, from a colorful flower show to a celebration of Japanese culture. Friday, March 23rd
The Official Commemoration of the 107th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire takes place today. The ceremony will unfold at the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street from 11:30am to 1pm. It’s one of many events taking place across New York City in commemoration of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.
Saturday, March 24th
Sumo Stew is going down at The Brooklyn Kitchen from 6pm to 9pm! The action-packed event features live stream sumo matches from grand tournaments in Japan, alongside a variety of food and drink options. Dine on bowls of chankonabe (sumo stew) and bento boxes while drinking beer, sake and tea. Japanese artisan vendors will also be present on site.

Sunday, March 25th
The abandoned Ellis Island Hospital complex — once the standard for United States medical care (and later transformed to the FBI headquarters when the island served as a detention center) — has been left to decay for nearly 60 years. Now, Untapped Cities is bringing you behind-the-scenes for a unique exploration of the abandoned facility; on this experience, you’ll visit the contagious disease wards, the autopsy rooms and have exclusive access to places usually closed to the public.

The Macy’s Flower Show is back, and runs from March 25th to April 8th this year. Celebrate spring with colorful arrangements of stunning flowers.
The 34th Annual Blessing of the Rides at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park takes place at 10:45am on Palm Sunday. This year, in honor of the Wheel’s 98th anniversary, the first 98 people on line will ride for free after the Blessing ceremony.
Monday, March 26th
Join the New York Adventure Club for a behind-the-scenes look into the Public Design Commission Archive, where an archive of projects reviewed by the Commission since 1902 are stored. On this unique event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history of the City’s public works.
Tuesday, March 27th
Join leaders of some of the city’s most innovative public art projects and spaces including the High Line’s Cecilia Alemani, Governors Island’s Meredith Johnson, and The Laundromat Project’s Kemi Ilesanmi for a roundtable discussion about what’s next in the world’s most exciting city for public art. Hosted by The Museum of the City of New York, The State of the Public Art talk will take place from 6:30 to 8:30pm. (It’s also FREE for Untapped Cities Insiders).
Wednesday, March 28th
Enjoy Dinner in the Dark at CAMAJE, where you’ll feast on multi-course meals eaten while blindfolded. Without sight, diners’ other senses are heightened to allow them to experience taste, smell and texture differently.
