Arts Brookfield is once again hosting Canstruction for the 22nd Annual NYC Competition in the Winter Garden and in the lobby of 250 Vesey Street, what they call “the world’s most imaginative food charity.” Large sculptures entirely of canned foods made for the competition will be on display from November 6 – November 20, 2014 at Brookfield Place. Ranging from witty to endearing, each entry has been thought out and planned by designers who truly care about the food donations that the event supports.

Turn it Around by GACE Consulting Engineers PC

Since 1992, design teams from architecture firms, civic associations, and engineering design firms (with help from the students that they mentor) have been building structures out of food cans. This year, 30 NYC teams have spent months designing their canned food creations and had one night to assemble them before the competition’s opening on November 6th. The competition’s categories include Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity, Most Cans, and Jurors’ Favorite. The winners will be chosen by a jury comprised of architects, design professionals, and culinary gurus but there is also a People’s Choice Award on which the public can vote via Facebook.

New York is one of 150+ cities worldwide that is taking part in the Canstruction International Competition, which has collected and donated over 25 million pounds of food to local ____ since 1992. Additionally, last year’s winners will be on display this fall as well:  “Apple Tree” in the Grace Building (1114 Avenue of the Americas), “Once Upon A Can” at 245 Park Avenue, and “Patience and Fortitude” at One Liberty Plaza (165 Broadway).

Put Hunger Behind Us

Admission to view the entries is free, but visitors are highly encouraged to donate canned foods. They are asking for high-quality, non-perishable cans of food. These donations and the cans used in the design competition will be donated to City Harvest to feed the hungry New Yorkers. Around City Harvest and Canstruction strategically pair up around Thanksgiving time to donate in time for the holidays to 500+  soup kitchens and community food pantries throughout the city.
