Join Friends of the Cathedral to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the building of the Great Nave. Architectural historian and Cathedral expert Nicolas Kemper leads us through the fascinating story of a critical chapter in the Cathedral’s history in 1925 to its completion on the eve of World War II.
In the midst of the Roaring 1920s, two people, a clergyman and a politician, joined forces to jumpstart the delayed building of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In 1925, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine consisted of the Great Crossing, the apsidal chapels, the baptistry, and just the foundation floor of the Nave. Bishop William T. Manning and Franklin D. Roosevelt, inspired by architect Ralph Adams Cram’s vision, led a nation-wide campaign to fund what we now know as the Great Nave.
The fundraising effort included citizens throughout New York City as well as donors from across the entire United States. The Nave opened on December 6, 1941–the very eve of WWII. A remarkably short time for such an immense undertaking!
Nicolas Kemper is an architectural historian and volunteer tour guide at the Cathedral. A graduate of Yale University and Yale School of Architecture, Nicolas is the publisher of New York Review of Architecture.
