Here’s what the Untapped New York team is looking forward to in the upcoming week, as we approach Valentine’s Day! (We’ll have a separate guide to that loved/hated holiday coming soon). There are new exhibition opens, and closing events, tours to New York City’s hidden gems, a Subway series competition for the city’s best beer, and more!
We’ll be hosting a tour of the tucked away Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, free for Untapped New York Insiders with the museum’s Executive Director Meg Ventrudo. Insiders will take a guided tour of the Library and Gallery space, hear an introduction about the founder of the Museum, Jacques Marchais, and the learn the history of the museum buildings. The Lewis Latimer Museum will have an opening reception for its latest exhibition Home/Land, which looks at the influence of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 on Lewis Latimer’s family, focusing on the tactics used to detain, deport, and re-enslave “runaways” with current practices used by Immigration Customs Enforcement to control the influx of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. The exhibition pairs true stories of those who escaped or attempted to escape slavery in the years surrounding the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 with current experiences of families attempting to migrate to the United States with the hope of finding a home in the land of the free.
From 1 to 4 PM, the Queens Museum will have a live Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, a chain reaction activity with NYSCI, and a special tour on the occasion of the closing day of The Art of Rube Goldberg exhibition at the Queens Museum! The Art of Rube Goldberg is the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition since 1970 to celebrate the groundbreaking artwork of one of the most influential cartoon illustrators of the twentieth century.

At 6 PM, we’ll be hosting a tour of the amazing United Palace Theatre for our Untapped New York Insiders. We’ve got just two slots left to this free tour!
Poster House is hosting a book signing for the artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh to celebrate the launch of her new book Stop Telling Women to Smile, the same title as her work around New York City that we have featured in our recent art installation guides. One of her works can be seen on 125th Street in Harlem.
We’ve got two slots left for our very special Black History Month tour of Seneca Village, co-hosted with the Central Park Conservancy. This tour is free for Insiders.
Pop-Up Magazine is a touring “live magazine” show, created for a stage, a screen, and a live audience. It returns to the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House with its Winter 2020 Issue, featuring stories about a soap opera’s significance in post-Soviet Russia, flying saucers and family obsessions, the criminalization of humanitarian aid at the border, learning to say what we mean—and even some cabaret. We’ve got two free tickets for Untapped New York Insiders for the February 13th show (to be given away on our Insiders Facebook page). Tickets start at $39 and can be purchased here.
The annual craft beer craze will take over Brookfield Place for the third year from 4:00 to 9:00 PM on February 12 and 13. The iconic Winter Garden will transform into a classic biergarten showcasing 15 of New York City’s top breweries from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island for a citywide ‘Subway Series’ challenge.
Friends of the Upper East Side is hosting the talk Destination Deco: An Illustrated Look at Jazz Age Architecture on the Upper East Side with Anthony W. Robbins, author of The Guidebook to New York Art Deco. We’ve got a limited number of free tickets available for Untapped New York Insiders, who can register here. It’s the “Sweet 16” party for Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, the organization that spurred the creation of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. Museum of City of New York will be hosting the event The Data We Don’t See with Giorgia Lupi. We’ve got two free tickets for Untapped New York Insiders. In this illustrated talk, information designer Giorgia Lupi will discuss our new data reality and “data humanism,” her unique philosophy for understanding and working with data.
