As summer approaches, Pride Month rolls on and more exciting outdoor events are popping up all over New York City. This week, visit the largest Pride flag in the city, catch a film series about New York City screening in a cemetery, celebrate Junteenth and more!

Friday, June 14th

Gain private access to the top of the Little Red Lighthouse on a special tour with Untapped Cities Insiders. Led by an urban Park Ranger, guests will climb the original cast iron steps of this tiny beacon tucked under the George Washington Bridge to take in views of the Manhattan skyline and Hudson River. Attend a lunchtime lecture at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and learn about the 19th century history of New York and the hotel through examining the portraits of illustrious New Yorkers and visitors to the city. Compare them to portraits realized by some modern New Yorkers. Bring your own lunch to enjoy while sharing an informal discussion.

Revel in the New York City of the late Twenty Teens, at Rooftop Films’ New York Non-Fiction short film series inside Green-Wood Cemetery. The movies this year chronicle the endurance of the city’s cab drivers suffering through an era of technological disruption; document the toil of e-bike delivery workers as they traverse our over-policed streets; and use video game technology to critique the questionable city planning strategies of Robert Moses. The films will be preceded by a concert and followed by an after party. Tickets are required.

Saturday, June 15th

Ascend with Pride at the FDR Four Freedoms Park World Pride Celebration. The afternoon of events for all ages will run from 12:00PM until 6:00PM and featured food trucks for a picnic on the lawn, a visit from Drag Queen Story Hour, books that focus on diversity and inclusivity from Little Bee Books, and VideoOut will be onsite all day capturing coming out stories for their online library. The events coincide with the parks reveal of New York City’s largest pride flag which will transform the steps of the park.

Uncover the maritime history of New York City on a new Untapped Cities walking tour. On this expert led tour, guests will hear stories of the infamous sea captains Adrian Block and William Kidd, walk the less-charted trail along the historic east side slips including Old Slip and Coenties, and learn about New York’s old buried ships on both the Hudson and East River shores and New York’s old floating churches, while discovering maritime related sites such as the International Merchant Marine Building, The Cunard Building, the Alexander Hamilton Custom House, and more!

Tour of NYC’s Maritime History

For this weekend only, explore the abandoned and off-limits structures of Fort Totten Park like never before. Thanks to a new public art installation, ranger guided tours, and a theatrical experience inside the historic military structures, the public will have special access to areas of the park which are usually off-limits, in order to fully engage and discover the park’s past. Untapped Cities Insiders can be one of the first to explore the site with early access before the park opens to the public!

Enjoy unlimited wine tastings at the Vinho Verde Wine Experience. Celebrate Junteenth at the 10th Annual Juneteenth NYC Festival. For almost 150 years June 19th has been celebrated as a day of freedom, marking the day word of the emancipation proclamation finally reached the enslaved people of America. This free, family friendly festival will feature a parade march led by a steel pan band, special live performances, crafts, food, games, raffles and more!

Sunday, June 16th

See the newly restored and stunning Gothic elements of the Old First reformed Church in Brooklyn on a behind-the scenes tour. Home to one of the oldest congregations in New York, founded by Dutch colonists, the almost 130-year-old church has just completed Phase 1 of an extensive restoration project, the first in its history. Join Untapped Cities Insiders and the church’s Pastor go to inside and see Tiffany stained glass, gilded chandeliers, the detailed coffered ceiling, custom pews, a historic organ and more. Monday, June 17th

Enjoy a free performance by the Met Opera at The Met’s Summer Recital Series in Socrates Park. Returning for its ninth season, the performance will feature soprano Leah Hawkins, tenor Mario Bahg, and baritone Joseph Lim with Dimitri Dover on piano. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Picnic blankets are encouraged!

Tuesday, June 18th

Meet the goats of Riverside Park at a “Goatham” Gardener Talk for kids and adults. Riverside Park Conservancy’s President & CEO, Dan Garodnick, will welcome Goat Farmer Larry Cihanek and one of his goats to Goatham (W120th St at Riverside Drive) to speak, alongside one of the Conservancy’s Gardeners, about the goat program and how it is enhancing the environment of Riverside Park. A brief talk will be followed by a Q&A and a chance to meet the goats! Bring your own chair or blanket to sit on, or come prepared to stand. This event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, June 19th

Take part in the final program in the Museum of the City of New York’s Housing Tomorrow’s City series, Dwelling in the Future: Imagining Tomorrow’s City. At this event, a group of visionary urban thinkers, architects, and artists will ponder  how New Yorkers might inhabit and experience the city several generations from now. Featuring design researcher Alix Gerber, architect Mitchell Joachim, science fiction writer Sam Miller, and artist Ayodamola Tanimowo Okunseinde. Expect a lively — and mind-expanding — evening of presentations and discussion. Moderated by K.A. Dilday, senior editor at CityLab.

See the all-male comedy ballet company, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, perform classic works at Central Park’s SummerStage as part of this months Pride celebrations. Subverting ballet’s strict gender roles, the troupe performs both male and female roles, imbuing contemporary and classic ballets with humor and provocation. The performance will mark the company’s first time gracing SummerStage, as well as the 45th anniversary of its formation in 1974. The performance will be preceded by a talk with the ballet members and Stonewall 50 Consortium founder, Eric Marcus, about the ballet’s history and legacy. RSVP is required for the talk. Both events are free.

Thursday, June 20th

Join architectural historian Francis Morrone for a history talk and beer tasting at Ryan’s Daughter. Presented by the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, Step in, Stand Clear, Drink Up! will be an informal talk celebrating the new line of the Second Avenue Subway, which can take you all the way from the Upper East Side to Coney Island. Morrone will trace the development of transit on the Upper East Side from horse cars to steam engines to subways. We’ll find out how the 2nd and 3rd Avenue Els carried newcomers to Yorkville, helping the neighborhood’s immigrant communities flourish; see how transit on Park Avenue “went electric” and made the area one of the most prestigious addresses in the country, and discover who’s behind the MTA’s new spectacular subway art.

Celebrate the launch of ViaHero, a new travel tool that connects travelers with locals in the destination they are visiting, at the Blind Barber.
