15 Things to Do in NYC This Week January 24-30, 2020

With a short work week, we’re back to the weekend already! There are a ton of things to do in New York City this weekend and into next week as we finish out the month of January. There are tours, talks, immersive experiences, and the beginning of Chinese New Year celebrations.

Friday January 24th

The Eldridge Street Museum’s Outsiders Book Club  at 11 AM celebrates the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage with stories of women as outsiders. Each month, your skilled group leader Lucy Shahar will guide robust group discussions and illuminate new insights. First up: The Female Persuasion, a novel by Meg Wolizer. We’ve got spots open on our members preview of our new Coffee Tour & Tasting for 2 PM on Friday and 2 PM on Saturday. Tickets are free for Untapped New York Insiders. To join a public tour, dates begin on January 30th, tickets here.

The Merchant’s House Museum is hosting its Dark Days of Winter Candlelight Ghost Tour, starting at 6:30 or 7 PM.

Saturday January 25th

It’s Chinese New Year! We’ll have a guide out for you tomorrow on how to take in the culinary delights of New York City, and not just in Chinatown.

The Queens Museum will open its doors for Spooktacular: Out of this World’s Fair! The 1oth annual Spooktacular will pay tribute to the Museum’s history as the New York Pavilion for the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fair and skyrocket us into a future where the next Fair may even be hosted on the moon…

The Lewis Latimer Museum will be hosting a scientific Lunar New Year celebration for all ages with fun hands-on tinkering activities combining art and science.

Sunday, January 26th

Monday January 27th

Fraunces Tavern

At the Fraunces Tavern Museum from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, join the Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York, Inc. for the Tallmadge Day Commemoration also marking the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Golden Hill. Frederick Samuel Tallmadge, the second President of the Sons of the Revolution enabled the Society to acquire Fraunces Tavern in 1904. The event will include a presentation by historian and author Barnet Schecter.

Tuesday, January 28th

Experience Vacation Planet, a new immersive installation in New York City at 25 Kent in Williamsburg. We’ll be hosting a walkthrough with artist Anne Spalter at 6 PM for Untapped New York Insiders.

Museum of Chinese America will host author Abigail Hing Wen, author of the new book Loveboat, Taipei. This young adult novel is a Crazy Rich Asians meets Jane Austen Comedy of Manners. It debuted this month on the New York Times best sellers list and is the story of a young dancer whose strict parents send her to Taipei to learn Mandarin for the summer, and she has the time of her life instead. Tickets are $15 and include museum admission and wine.

Museum of the City of New York will host Big Fun: Indigenous Art & Performance Resistance, an evening of poetry, music, and art celebrating radical urban Indigenous resistance, resilience, and activism.

Thursday, January 30th

At 4 PM, the Brooklyn Academy of Music will be opening up its hidden archives to Untapped New York readers on a special tour with Louie Fleck, BAM’s Archive manager. Join us on this special tour!

Join the Untapped New York team for Rediscovering New York: Revealing Forgotten Landscapes, an evening of film and conversation at the Brooklyn Historical at 6:30 PM as they reveal the hidden histories and secrets of three haunting New York City locations. This exciting panel will be moderated by Untapped New York Founder Michelle Young. Michelle will be joined by Aaron Asis, creator of Unforgotten Films as well as experts and advocates Moses Gates of the Regional Planning Association, Justin Rivers of Untapped New York, Salmaan Khan of People for the Pavilion, and artist Freya Powell help to unlock these forgotten gems. Tickets $15 ($10 for BHS members, a limited number are free for Untapped New York Insiders).

The Merchant’s House Museum will host A Spine-Tingling Birthday Celebration for Edgar Allan Poe at 6:30 PM with Andrea Janes, founder of Boroughs of the Dead, who will discuss Poe’s residence in the City, his rivals, and admirers, and his writing about antebellum New York’s architecture, literature, and current events. The evening will conclude with John Kevin Jones (A Christmas Carol at the Merchant’s House)as the great master of horror performing bone-chilling tales of irrational revenge, obsession, and murder. In Unexpected Pairings: Katz’s Delicatessen & Teranga at the Museum of the City of New York at 6:30 PM, Pierre Thiam, co-founder and executive chef of the new West African comfort food spot Teranga (at The Africa Center), joins Jake Dell, owner of the famed NYC landmark Katz’s Delicatessen, for an exploration of the different meanings of comfort food and how they reflect the city’s diverse immigrant histories. New York Times food writer Julia Moskin moderates.
