Friday July 27th

Be dazzled by the up-close magic of illusionist Siegfried Tieber at the intimate and interactive Atlas Obscura show See/Saw in Brooklyn. Throughout the evening, Siegfried will answer questions and share the philosophy behind his unique form of magic and guests will receive a complimentary toast of prosecco.

Take part in the Thunderbird 40th Annual Grand Mid-Summer Pow Wow. More than forty Native American nations will be represented at the largest and oldest pow wow in New York City. Over the course of three days the public is invited to see intertribal Native American dance competitions and browse a large selection Native American art, crafts, jewelry, and food in the Queens Farm Park apple orchard.

Saturday, July 28th

Using the 6 train as your own ten-car time machine, ride through the history of the NYC subway system from 1901 to the present on our Underground Tour. Along the way, see abandoned ghost stations and hear stories about formation and evolution of the world’s largest rapid transit system.

Catch the New York premiere of Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records presented by Rooftop Films at the House of Vans in Brooklyn. The film will be followed by a live performance by Youth Code and there will be a Pop-Up Wax Trax! Record Store on site!

Sunday, July 29th

Grab your phone and assemble a team (or go at it alone) for The Museum of the City of New York’s Secret Central Park Scavenger Hunt. Race to match historic images of the park to their present-day locations. After you’ve uncovered all the clues, meet back at the Museum terrace for light refreshments and an awards ceremony.

Monday, July 30th

Take part in the launch of Finding Tibbetts and Estuary Tattoos, an initiative by City as Living Laboratory to advocate for the Daylighting of Tibbetts Brook. Hear from Chairman Charles McKinney and Founder Mary Miss on the vision for unearthing Tibbetts Brook and from members of the Coalition for Daylighting Tibbetts Brook, who will discuss why Tibbetts matters. SLO Architecture’s work in progress Finding Tibbetts, a mobile wetlands and Bob Braine’s body-painting work mapping the history of the wetlands, Estuary Tattoos will be on view.

Tuesday, July 31st

Party for a good cause and watch the sunset over New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty at the Sunset Soirée on Governor’s Island. Light refreshments will be served including artisanal cocktails infused with lavender grown on the Island by EarthMatter.

Distinguished Professor of History at Queens College Joshua B. Freeman  will tackle the wide-ranging effects heavy industry has had on society in a discussion on his latest book Behemoth: A History of the Factory and the Making of the Modern World. This book talk is presented in connection with the exhibition, “The Business of Brooklyn” at the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Wednesday, August 1st

Meditate, make sand mandalas, or join a painting class with Tibetan Monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery. As part of the Sacred Art Tour of 2018 these monks will be sharing ancient Tibetan traditions, culture and wisdom through various workshops, meditations, and dharma talks at Golden Drum. Events will take place everyday, throughout the day, until August 5th.

Thursday, August 2nd

Learn the stories of America’s river people at the Waterfront Museum’s Artist Talk with Wes Modes. Modes has been traveling the rivers of America in a recreated 1940s-era shanty boat, collecting oral histories and he is bringing them to New York City with A Secret History of American River People.

Uncover Williamsburg’s layers of history and the neighborhood’s evolution from a gritty industrial area, to a counterculture haven, and finally to the hip Mecca it is today on our Grit to Hip, a Williamsburg Walking Tour.

As part of their outdoor film series Moonlight & Movies, The Museum of the City of New York will present Jules Dassin’s 1948 film noir The Naked City on the museum terrace. The film will be preceded by an introduction by author, filmmaker, and architect James Sanders, the Principal of Sanders + Associates and co-creator of the Museum of the City of New York’s award-winning short documentary Timescapes with Jake Barton of Local Projects.
