When posting about the Manhattanhenge sunset earlier this year, I had found information from Time Out New York that the sunrise edition would occur on 11/30 . There does not appear to be any official astronomical confirmation online regarding when this year’s sunrise is, so I’ve decided to be an astronomer and do my own math. As we know, the dates of Manhattanhenge are linked to the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.
In 2006, the sunrise Manhattanhenge occurred on December 5th. The equinoxes fall on the same dates in 2006 and 2009, so by our calculations, sunrise Manhattanhenge should also occur this year on December 5th. If anybody knows the answer, let us know!
Also, apparently the Manhattanhenge sunrise is a key clue to last night’s CSI episode, in which they claim the date to be 12/5/2009. Try both dates if you’re die hard, and send us your photos at [email protected]: 11/30/2009 @ 7am and 12/5/2009 @7:05am. Regardless, it seems that even viewing it on dates in the vicinity gets you a similarly spectacular view. For 2010, the sunrise should occur on January 8th.
