How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
Improv Everywhere is an organization that puts on flash mob events, creating those “quintessential New York” moments for us. You might recognize them from the annual No Pants Subway Ride or frozen Grand Central. Maybe you’ve participated in the MP3 Experiment. This year’s No Pants Subway Ride took place all around the world, from Jerusualem to Oslo to Mexico City. In New York, Untapped photographer Chuck Lau was one of the official No Pants photographers and shared with us (although we can’t help sensing the irony of an unofficial event having an official photographer). He was assigned to the Central Park meeting point and after all the groups converged at Union Square (in the subway of course), there was even an official 2012 No Pants Subway Ride After Party at the Greenwich Village Country Club. Meanwhile, in Washington DC, Untapped founder Michelle Young reports pimply faced teenagers chanting “PANTS PANTS!” and not following the No Pants rules of keeping a straight face and not filming yourselves. Amateurs!
