One of the most enjoyable things about living in the city of San Francisco is how visually dynamic it is. There is simply art everywhere, but not in a way that inundates you. The most interesting pieces are hidden away in nooks and crannies that you may not even see. ART on STREETS highlights this city’s art through the lens of a “Polaroid” camera (except it’s various apps on the iPhone). Each week we will feature a different soundtrack for your viewing pleasure: a single song from a Bay Area musical artist. So plug in your earbuds (or not) and have a listen while you check out the art.
This mural is on Market Street and has been next to a fenced-in lot for years (i.e. you can’t get up next to the mural). It has always caught my eye with its simple shapes, size and rainbow coloring. The mural is pretty easy to find, despite its location at a confusing part of Market street, where it seems like five (ok, it’s really just three) streets come together. To get there, stay on the south side of Market and walk to the corner where Market intersects with 16th Street. Lately I have noticed more activity in the lot around the mural. The fence is starting to be covered up for active construction, so I’m thinking it’s possible that this art may not be viewable ever again-after the construction is completed. (The job card on the fence doesn’t say much.) Public and street art really take on a life of their own, as they are subject to the weather, people and the ever changing city environment. I recommend getting on the old F train (I like the Italian one) headed toward the Castro to see the mural before it’s completely covered.
