ART on STREETS: Linden Street

One of the most enjoyable things about living in the city of San Francisco is how visually dynamic it is. There is simply art everywhere, but not in a way that inundates you. The most interesting pieces are hidden away in nooks and crannies that you may not even see. ART on STREETS highlights this city’s art through the lens of a “Polaroid” camera (except it’s various apps on the iPhone). Each week we will feature a different soundtrack for your viewing pleasure: a single song from a Bay Area musical artist. So plug in your earbuds (or not) and have a listen while you check out the art.

Today we are taking a little walk in Hayes Valley, San Francisco. A mini visual tour of the part of Linden Street (between Fell & Hayes) near Octavia, which is particularly bright and where the art changes quite often. This spot is popular because at either end there are coffee kiosks-Blue Bottle on one end of the alley and Ritual on the other. The images are generally in order of the art currently there, starting on the left side of the street (with your back facing Octavia Street). I am particularly fond of the contrast between the large, bright lettering and the swooping, less linear shapes of the other pieces, as well as the textures of the bricks and the grating on the outsides of the windows. Most of the work is on the backside of an auto body shop, so depending on if they are open or closed, there is more art to see. I happened to go when they were open, so some of the roll-up doors to the garage weren’t down. These roll-up doors are where the other art is.
