Vintage 1970s Photos Show Lost Sites of NYC's Lower East Side
A quest to find his grandmother's birthplace led Richard Marc Sakols on a mission to capture his changing neighborhood on film.
This week’s #untappedcities Instagram “Pic” of the Week was sent into us by Instagram user @L_O_O_K. We love the vintage sepia look the Instagrammer has applied to this well-known vista, taken on a ferry just as it pulls in to dock. The relatively more modern Watchtower building contrasts with the older building stock in DUMBO, and the clusters of people are apparent enough to discern, but indistinct enough to look like they could be from any era.
The Watchtower Buildings are owned by the Jehovah’s Witness, who used part of the complex to print their two monthly publications, Awake and Watchtower, until seven years ago when production was moved upstate. In 2012, the group announced their intention to sell all 34 of the buildings along the Brooklyn waterfront.
