Do you know where this is?

For a fun way to get through the work day, check out Geoguessr, a quirky new game that uses Google Street View to explore the world. The concept is simple: you are “dropped” into a random location anywhere in the world on Google Maps Street View and told to figure out where you are. After an attempt to pinpoint your exact location on world map, it tells you how far you are from the actual location. The closer you are, the more points you get.

The task may seem impossible at first, but after a few rounds you learn some tricks. Zooming in on signs, you’ll see the area’s languages (and you can even cheat by searching street names that you come across). Otherwise take a look at your surroundings. Are you near water? What flora and fauna are present? Lastly, it’s important to remember that only certain parts of the world are represented on Street View. Recurring countries include Canada, Australia, and Brazil. Also check out these gaming tips from Slate and the Huffington Post!

We love Geoguessr for encouraging people to pay more attention to the intricacies of places around the world. Most locations that pop up in aren’t big cities or tourist attractions, but the images are nonetheless often unique. Give it a shot and discover new places!

How do you think we did? (Admittedly, we were totally wrong about D)
