sand castle-Water St Financial District-NYC New York-Untapped Cities-Lara Elmayan

This 18-foot sand castle that’s been built on Water Street across from 1 New York Plaza yet was built by Matt Long, a professional sand sculptor. He’s a wood restorer by trade, but has made sand castles on commission for a wide range of corporate companies. His castles have previously popped up in Rockefeller Center.

The castle is (perhaps sadly) not just an impromptu piece. It’s for South Street Seaport’s summer programming called “SEE/CHANGE” by the Howard Hughes Corporation who is manager and developer of the seaport. It’s also part of the city’s Water Street POPS programming.

Long’s wood restoration company, FRW, LLC, has worked on Radio City Music Hall , Lincoln Center, The Federal Reserve Bank and New York Public Library at 42nd Street among other city landmarks. His company is listed in the Landmarks Conservancy Restoration Directory.

DNAInfo first spotted the construction on July 9th and the photo above popped to the top of the NYC subreddit yesterday. Here are a few photos we snapped this morning:
