How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
The last thing you might expect to find near the Brooklyn Navy Yard along the BQE is a full-service spa and wet lounge. But the area is changing fast and Body by Brooklyn has been in the middle of it. Its 10,000 square foot facility has been in operation for over seven years, bearing witness to the revitalization of the Navy Yard, the arrival of CitiBike, and even an organic grocery store just next door.
Body by Brooklyn is probably most well-known for its night spa which will be back mid-January 2014 with a more polished feel. But these parties only partly capture what Body by Brooklyn is about. Located next to a CitiBike station in close proximity to Park Slope, Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights, the spa is structured as an all-day escape accessible to urbanites at all budgets. With its unique combination of amenities and services, Body by Brooklyn aims to encourage a holistic lifestyle of health and beauty for its guests. Its remedies are rooted in both ancient and modern know-how of water therapies for preventive care and health maintenance.
Stay all day in the Wet Lounge which has a jacuzzi, Swedish Sauna, Russian Sauna, Cold Plunge, Turkish Steam room and a “Tsunami” shower. You’ll feel far away from the city amidst the natural materials of the spa, from the river rock in the Russian Sauna to the hearth stone table in the Turkish Steam Room. Fun fact: the building itself is a former chocolate factory and many of the original details, such as exposed brick walls, have been preserved.
Spa-goers can create their own hydrotherapy experience using the how-to guide, ranging from “Hangover Relief” to “Energize” to relaxation, with recommended juices and cocktails. Warm up by the fireplace or read a book in the B3 lounge wearing the complimentary white robes, which owner Mira Goldin calls a great “social equalizer.”
There are ten treatment rooms in the facility, and if you book a massage or spa treatment, or spend $100 at Fresh Fanatic grocery next door, you get complimentary all-day access to the wet lounge. There are a wide range of massage treatments from classics like Reflexology, Swedish Massage, and Shiatsu to unique Body by Brooklyn experiences like a Chocolate Massage and a Sedona Mud Wrap. Also available are beauty treatments like facials, microdermabrasion and waxing.
The bar is open all day long, and Body by Brooklyn offers brunches in the cafe on Saturday and Sunday. You can host bachelorette parties, bridal showers, corporate parties, or rent out the VIP room which comes with a private jacuzzi and steam room.
You can visit Body by Brooklyn just on a day pass, or get longer memberships from one month to a year. Body by Brooklyn Gift Certificates, available online and in the spa, can make great stocking stuffer for the holidays. If you plan on checking out this urban spa escape, mention the B3 Reward Program from this article and receive VIP perks during your visit available to B3 Reward members only.
Body by Brooklyn offers a mind and body urban escape right in Brooklyn with an all-in-one experience, from spa treatments, to the wet lounge, to bar and cafe. Stay all day or just for a short time and get rejuvenated this winter.
