This week we profile Untapped Cities intern Matt Nestor, who writes our vintage photos column and likes to cross-dress and write about it in his free time.

What’s your “day job”?

I do the downtown hustle, peddling everything from script edits to Airbnb rooms.

What’s your favorite Untapped spot in your city?

Everybody knows about Caffe Reggio on MacDougal street, but not everybody flirts with all the waitresses there as relentlessly as I do.

Favorite piece you’ve written for Untapped:
5 Beautiful New York Murder Scenes.

What’s the most memorable thing that happened while at Untapped Cities?
I went deep into Queens on the snowiest day of the year to write a piece about New York’s fastest sledding hill, didn’t find it, and came within about two minutes of frostbite.

What’s the most surprising and/or valuable thing you learned at Untapped Cities?
All the extraordinarily cheap and not half-embarrassing places there are to bring a date to in this city.

What’s your favorite Untapped place you’ve visited while traveling? Where do you want to visit next?
I went to a mud-wrestling contest in the north of Togo once—so Untapped that I don’t remember the name of it. On a more mundane note, I’ve always wanted to go to San Francisco.

What’s your favorite obscure fact about your city?
I really, really, really loathe cars. But did you know that, in the years before the auto, NYC streets accumulated 500 tons of horse manure everyday?

Craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Climbed the Washington Square Christmas tree once. They told me not to, said that I would either die or be arrested. And you know what? They were right. I was arrested.

Best Celebrity Sighting:
One time when I was really smashed, Rudy Giuliani’s ex-wife invited me into her apartment and I played with her dog. And no, that’s not a euphemism for anything.

What are some of your favorite websites?
I think I’m supposed to list some cool underground urban sites here, but really I only go to nytimes.com and nba.com. And now that I put a block on those (freeing up time for me to do something with my life), I don’t really visit anything at all. Except thedailyvirgin.net. That’s definitely the best site.
