Maybe it’s just because it’s summer, but meat seems to be on the mind of NYC marketing execs, as evidenced by last week’s “Meat Rushmore” statue in Columbus Circle celebrating National Jerky Day. NYC’s carnivores can feast again today, this time not just with their eyes. The Gothamist reports that an 80-foot long smoker is rolling into Union Square, handing out free sausage samples to promote–of all seemingly meat-related things–the History Channel’s summer television lineup.
The channel hired Texas restaurateur Trace “Rib Whisperer” Arnold’s Ultimate Smoker & Grill, whose twenty-foot hydraulic lid can hold up to 2,000 pounds of meat at a time, to grill jalapeno and chedder and hickory sausages for passersby. Bolder ones can also test their mettle on a mechanical gator inspired by the show Swamp People. The smoker has already hit up Concord, N.C.; the CMA Music Festival in Nashville; and Laconia, N.H. on its summer Cross-County Cookout. Next up is Pittsburgh over July 4 weekend.
The smoker will be parked in Union Square from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.
