Canoe Studios in the Starrett-Lehigh Building, Opening Night Venue for the 2015 Chelsea Music Festival
The Chelsea Music Festival is one of our favorite annual events in New York City, one The New York Times calls a “gem of a festival.” One of the main reasons is how encompassing the festival is, music is simply what undergirds all the programming but there’s always a combination of sensory experiences from food to scents, all taking place in some of New York City’s most unique venues.
Throughout the festival, which runs from June 12th to June 20th, we’ll be bringing you into these venues via photography but you can also join in–we’ve got a giveaway from the festival for two tickets to the Sibelius & Nielsen 150th Birthday Gala on June 14th, where the Culinary Artists-in-Residence of the Chelsea Music Festival, Danish Chef Carl Frederiksen and Finnish chef Sami Tallberg will curate a reception together, with open bar, paired to the music. Experience the groundbreaking Starrett-Lehigh Building as well, in this event at Canoe Studios.
This year’s festival, celebrating Finland and Hungary, will take place in venues like the private arts club Norwood Club, Canoe Studios in the Starrett-Lehigh Building, the Hungarian Consulate-General, Scandinavia House by architect James Stewart Polshek (he did the glass Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History and the update to the Brooklyn Museum), and the Finnish Lutheran Church.
Curated again by artistic directors Melinda Lee-Masur and Ken-David Masur, the festival will feature music from composers like Sibelius and more modern-day artists, open air Finnish tango and Hungarian dancing, and music ranging from baroque to jazz.
