Beau Stanton-Crown-Calm Before the Storm-Logan Hicks-Highline Loft-NYC“Crown” by Beau Stanton

The Highline Loft overlooking the High Line in New York will be opening a new art installation entitled “Calm before the Storm” on October 17th. Curated by Lori Zimmer (of Art Nerd NY) and Natalie Kates, the two man show by Logan Hicks and Beau Stanton will reconstruct a shipwreck and captain’s study, along with several new paintings inspired by nautical superstition, flood myths and classical paintings. While they work in different mediums, both artists use their love of classical nautical lore to convey their fears about modern environmental realities. The exhibition and installation will be set to an original score by Luv Jones.

Calm Before the Storm - High Line - Exhibitions - Untapped Cities

Hicks’ works with painting and aerosol on different surfaces to create photorealistic interpretation of nautical traditions. His work reflects his belief that there is a force of fate and inability to alter momentum. He combines in unusual juxtapositions traditional imagery and modernity, linking, for instance, the Execution of Lady Jane Grey to our dependency on technology. Stanton chose oil painting, sculpture, and multiples to interpret his view in the exhibition. His work relates theories surrounding the divine retribution to current concerns over global climate change.

In addition, on October 28th, in honor of Halloween, they will be holding a costume party, “Sailors, Sirens and Sea Hags” to conclude the exhibition. Stay tuned for photos of the shipwreck, coming soon,
