A flight of whimsy arrived on the Broadway Pedestrian Plaza in the Garment District yesterday. Titled A Fancy Animal Carnival, these eleven large-scale, colorful sculptures were created by the Taiwanese artist, Hung Yin. Each of the whimsical sculptures reflects folk culture as well as region, and represents a narrative expressed through traditional Taiwanese symbols, which are believed to bring luck. They also represent the artist’s view of everyday life.

Born in 1970 in Taichung, Taiwan, Hung Yi was once the owner of nine restaurants. He shifted gears at the age of thirty, to follow his true love – art – with major exhibitions worldwide. While he exhibited in San Francisco in 2015 and 2014, this is Hung Yi’s first New York exhibition. A Fancy Animal Carnival is free and open to the public on the Garment District Broadway Mall, which runs from 41st Street to 37th Street. Take a peek at our photos beginning at 41st Street, running south. The installation will be on view through April 2017.
