The original Federal Hall was constructed in 1700 as New York’s City Hall and served as the first U.S. Capitol, witnessed the inauguration of the first U.S. President, and hosted the ratification of the Bill of Rights by the First Congress. The building that currently occupies the site, designed in 1842, was originally the United States Customs House and has been a hub of debate and dialogue throughout the evolution of U.S. political history.
