This Saturday, December 2, join railroad car repair and restoration company, Star Trak Inc., in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the last run of the New York Central Railroad’s 20th Century Limited. The original 1948 20th Century Limited car — a Henry Dreyfuss-designed Pullman Observation car called “Hickory Creek” — was once an express passenger train on the New York Central Railroad. Advertised as “The Most Famous Train in the World,” it operated from 1902 to 1967, traveling between Grand Central Terminal and LaSalle Street Station in Chicago, Illinois.

To honor this occasion, a one-day excursion between New York Penn Station and Albany-Rensselaer is being held, taking participants on a leisurely ride up the Hudson River Valley along much of the same route that the “Century” once traversed in its hey day.

For the 50th Anniversary of its last run, the train will travel from New York to Albany and return on the following schedule:

  • Depart – New York: 11:20am on Amtrak Train #233
  • Arrive – Albany-Renssalaer: 1:50pm
  • Depart – Albany-Renssalaer: 4:10pm
  • Arrive – New York Pennsylvania Station: 6:45pm on Amtrak Train #244

Once visitors arrive in Albany-Rensselaer, they are free to explore downtown Albany on their own before heading back to the “Century.” All guests will receive a special 20th Century Limited / Hickory Creek lapel pin, and the historic prewar Pullman Observation Car, “New York Central #3,” will also be on the train.

  1. I’ve traveled cross country by plane and via Amtrak, and I’ll take the train every time. Goodness, look how comfortable those cars look compared to a cramped airline seat. We sure did give up a lot of comfort for a few extra hours of speed.
