The anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration in New York City just passed on Monday this week and many of our readers will be attending the fabulous George Washington Inaugural Ball next week. Now, we’ve got one more way to celebrate this momentous occasion! On May 18th at 4 PM, Untapped Cities Insiders will be taken on a behind the scenes tour inside Federal Hall with National Park Service rangers. The tour will discuss the history of Federal Hall, the construction of the Customs House, and the transformation of the building into a National Memorial, along with fun facts and historical tidbits connected with the building.
Federal Hall was site was also home to the country’s first Congress, Supreme Court, and Executive Branch offices, where major moments in the foundation of the country took place, including the Stamp Act Congress and where the Bill of Rights was written. The current Greek Revival-style building with its impressive domed rotunda, served as the Customs House and later part of the US Sub-Treasury, and now serves as a museum and memorial to George Washington and the beginnings of the United States of America.
