Upon his return from a trip to Japan, photographer Michael Harlan Turkell wanted to find a way to bring Sumo to New York City. Turkell partnered with Harry Rosenblum, owner of The Brooklyn Kitchen, a center for culinary education, and together they came up with Sumo Stew, a monthly event that combines Japanese cuisine and a live-stream of sumo wrestling matches from Japan.

Each Sumo Stew event brings together a variety of Japanese food and beverage vendors from around the city and is anchored by a unique variation of chankonabe, the hearty broth that wrestlers prepare and eat before sumo matches. July’s Sumo Stew will feature a North Carolina BBQ-style Whole Hog chankonabe in collaboration with Tyson Ho of Arrogant Swine, plus delicacies, drinks, and dessert from other local businesses like Junzi, Momo Sushi Shack, Juku, O Ya and Mochidoki. Each Sumo Stew guest receives a bowl of the special chankonabe, a bento box composed of Japanese-inspired dishes from top local chefs, and 2 drink tickets to be used for sake, shochu, or a whisky cocktail.

For this month’s event, taking place on Tuesday July 17th, Sumo Stew is offering Untapped Cities readers a special discount! Use the code”KANPAI10″ to receive $10 off, which can be purchased at this link! If you are or become an Untapped Cities Insider, you can join this event for free! Tickets for the general public are $60.
