This week in New York City is full of celebrations, adventures, and opportunities to learn something new! Here are our picks for what to do in NYC this week:
Friday, August 10th
Experience a 360-degree outdoor film screening at Mirage Cinema’s presentation of The Fifth Element taking place at the tropical courtyard of The Brooklyn Mirage. There will be a pre-screening cocktail hour, snacks for sale, a custom built photo-booth, movie trivia and a post screening ice-cream social. *Due to inclement weather this event has been rescheduled for Friday, August 17.
Escape the New York Historical Society in a scavenger hunt designed by Watson Adventures. Assemble a team to help you solve a series of puzzles involving objects on display in the Museum to come up with the code that will save you from the poisonous spell of an evil magician! This event is part of the New York Historical Society’s “Summer of Magic” events.
Saturday, August 11th
Explore the abandoned Ellis Island Hospital Complex on Untapped Cities special Unframed JR Tour. On this tour, guests will see all 26 of the enlarged historical photographs that are currently installed in the hospital. This means you will get exclusive access to places not open on any other public tour, including numerous different locations not offered on our hard hat tour like the second floor of the complex.

Celebrate Coney Island’s immigrant heritage at the Eight Annual History Day. The event will take place at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park and The Coney Island History Project. There will be live entertainment from a diverse group of performers including the Brighton Ballet Theater School of Russian Ballet and Mariachi Real de Mexico de Ramon Ponce. Guests can also become a part of history by adding their visit to the Oral History Archive.

Untapped Cities’ Remnants of Gritty Old Times Square Tour will take you back to the 1970’s, when 42nd Street was the Deuce, Eighth Avenue was the Minnesota Strip, the Great White Way was a red light district, and the Crossroads of the World was XXX-rated. See former peepshows, grindhouses, adult book stores and more while hearing stories of characters like the King of the Peeps; the reclusive genius behind the McDonalds of Sex; the woman who built a gay and S&M porn empire; the slumlord with two suitcases filled with gold and five wives; and the Catholic priest who flew too close to the neon sun and crashed and burned.

Monday, August 13th
Take part in WORD, an annual literature series held at the Granite Prospect steps in Prospect Park. Monday’s reading, which is part of a series curated by local, independent bookstores, will feature three writers published by Feminist Press: Sarah Schulman, Vikki Warner, and Ivelisse Rodriguez. Each program will include a reading, Q&A, and book signing with the authors.
Tuesday, August 14th
See the work of Thomas Bayrle at the New Museum’s “Playtime” exhibit before it closes on September 2nd. This exhibition contains over 115 works by the West German artist, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, wallpapers and prints, early computer-based art, videos, and 16mm film.
Concoct a custom massage oil at the Museum of Sex’s After Hours: Aromatherapy and Sensuality workshop. Aromatherapist and herbalist Amy Anthony will teach guests about the effects of different oils on the mind/body connection and how to harness their power.
Catch a free outdoor screening of Hair at the Central Park Conservancy Film Festival. The festival celebrates New York film and flmamkers and will feature pre-show programming and music.
Wednesday, August 15th
Learn about the history of magic at the New York Historical Society’s illustrated talk “Abracadabra to Alchemy: 7000 Years of Magic,” with auction specialist and art history lecturer Gabriella Corey.
Thursday, August 16th

Take in sweeping views of the Green-Wood Cemetery, New York Harbor, and downtown Manhattan as the sun sets and you prepare to hear some of the best jazz bands in New York City at Jazz at Twilight. Bring a blanket and pack a picnic! This Thursday’s performance will feature New Orleans jazz played by Jason Prover and the Sneak Thievery Orchestra.
