The newly opened Phase 2 of Hunters Point South Park in Long Island City doubles the size of the existing park which opened in 2013. Phase 2, which stretches from 54th Avenue to Newtown Creek, adds 5.5 acres of green, waterfront space to the formerly industrial area, bringing the total size of the park to 11 acres. Within this new area of the park there is a playground for children, fitness equipment for adults, a kayak launch, public art pieces, 1.5 acres of wetlands and a 30-foot-high platform over the East River from which visitors can take in sweeping views of Manhattan.

Phase 2, which like the rest of the park was designed by the firms of SWA/Balsley and Weiss/Manfredi, features many unique outdoor art installations, including the massive installation Luminescence, by Nobuho Nagasawa. This sculpture is made up of seven cement domes in the lawn that illuminate at night and represent the different phases of the moon. The park features other permanent and temporary pieces of art like the Tetherball Monument by Karyn Olivier and Convene by Xaveria Simmons.
