On August 24th, the historic Cunard Building at 25 Broadway in New York City’s Financial District will transform into one-of-a-kind passenger ship that will take guests around New York City on a voyage through time, with the help of cutting edge visual technology and special effects, in Moment Factory’s new multimedia show, Dream Ship DestinNY

D.S. DestiNY is an immersive, thirty-five minute show created by the multimedia entertainment studio Moment Factory in partnership with Cipriani, the global hospitality brand that manages the Cunard Building. With the help of advanced mapping technology, the show uses the building’s landmark architecture as a canvas for high resolution 360° digital content that will incorporate light, color, and sound to bring the historic building to life.

“The Cunard Building was built in the 1920s, so when we started this project we were challenged with integrating state-of-the-art technology into a New York City landmark building while carefully respecting the protected historical architecture,” says Giuseppe Cipriani. “It was additionally important for the team to embrace and highlight the rich history and details of this grand space, from the larger than life maps throughout the room, to the 65-foot-high vaulted ceilings, adorned with murals and ornate images of steamship routes and sea life. We want audiences to appreciate the character of the building and forget the technology used in the experience.”

The Cunard Building, was built in 1921 for the Cunard Steamship Line, a British-American cruise line named after a Samuel Cunard, the first person awarded a British trans-Atlantic steamship mail contract. The exterior of the building boasts a Renaissance façade, but it is the interior architecture that really impresses. The 183-foot long lobby of the building was designed by Benjamin Wistar Morris and was used as a ticketing hall for transatlantic journeys. Morris worked with muralist Ezra Winter to create a decor plan for the building that focused on marine and shipping themes. The walls of the lobby and its high vaulted ceilings are adorned with maps, paintings of steamship routes, and ornate sculptures.

The Cunard Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on September 19, 1995. From the late 1970s until 2000 it served as a branch of the Post Office. Sakchin Bessette, a Creative Partner of Moment Factory, is excited to bring the Moment Factory’s work into yet another historic building. “With our projects at the Parliament of Canada, the Macy’s flagship store in NYC, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall, and Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Moment Factory has built a reputation for breathing new life into historical spaces and bringing people together. The Cunard Building offered us the perfect opportunity to continue that mission. Through D.S. DestiNY, we are able to open the doors to a New York City landmark and bridge a piece of the city’s history with modern technologies to create a new entertainment experience unlike any other.” Today, the Cunard Building is controlled and operated by the global hospitality brand Cipriani as an event space.
