A lot of New York City’s iconic restaurants have closed in recent years, and the Carnegie Deli was a loss felt keenly. Little known is that the 81-year brand lives on and can be licensed. Two outposts currently exist: one in Madison Square Garden (as a concession stand on game nights) and one in the Mirage in Las Vegas. And from December 1 to 8, New York City will get a triumphant return of Carnegie Deli, albeit as a temporary pop up restaurant. It’s timed in conjunction with the second season of the hit Amazon series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is filmed in New York City.
The Carnegie Deli pop up will be located in Nolita, at 201 Lafayette Street. This playful iteration of the deli will be set in the year 1958 and have the tagline, “Home of the Maisel,” featuring a special “Maisel” sandwich. Amazon writes that vintage decor will include a jukebox, photobooth and even a period-style menu.
All the food and drinks will be 99 cents or below, including a “Susie” sandwich named after the main character Miriam’s agent, a “Mish Knish” for 75 cents, a black and white cookie for 50 cents, a cheesecake for 50 cents, and pickles for 50 cents. Drinks include Dr. Brown’s Soda, Iced Tea and Coffee, all for 50 cents. Although the Carnegie Deli pop up was taking advance reservations for up to 4 on Open Table (which were booked out fast), tables will open every hour for walk in guests. Plus there’s a takeout counter being billed as the “quickest takeout counter you’ve seen since 1958!”
According to NY Daily News, all proceeds from the Carnegie Deli popup for the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will be going to a good cause: The Lower East Side Girls Club.
