This year marks a special anniversary for the United Palace of Spiritual Arts (UPSA), an inclusive spiritual community housed inside the stunning Loew’s 175th Street Theatre. UPSA became the custodian and resident of the 1930s theater fifty years ago. To celebrate the special anniversary, the United Palace will hosts an all-day celebration which includes a special screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, a spiritual artistry celebration, and an after-party on the stage of the theater on April 7th.

If you are an Untapped Cities Insider, you can attend the screening for free! You can also enter an Insiders-only raffle to win tickets to the post-screening after-party. Not an Insider yet? In 1969, the Loew’s 175th Theater, one of five “wonder theaters” built by Loew’s in New York City between 1929 and 1930, was facing an uncertain future. The opulent, single screen theater had become too costly to maintain. That is when the United Palace of Spiritual Arts stepped in and made the theater its new home. Over the past fifty years,  UPSA has restored the theater to its original gilded glory and used the space to hosts entertainment and spiritual events.

Stanley Kubrick’s epic 1969 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, was the last movie to be shown at the 175th Street Theater in Washington Heights. At the anniversary screening on April 7th, the film will be preceded by a live organ performance. The organ inside the United Palace is the last of the five “wonder organs” still in its original home. After the movie, there will be a spiritual artistry celebration lead by UPSA Board Chair Jean Houston, Ph.D. with music performed by singer/songwriter Karen Drucker.  Following the celebration, there will be an on-stage after-party with hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

Tickets for all of the festivities are on sale now. Tickets to the screening will get you into the organ performance,  and spiritual artistry celebration as well, but tickets to the after-party are sold separately. If you are an Untapped Cities Insider, you can attend for free and enter out after-party ticket raffle. Untapped Cities Insiders can continue to celebrate the theater on May 26th with a special behind-the-scenes tour!
