Welcome back to our Untapped Cities contributor profile, where you can get to know the people behind the website and our experiences. Today, we profile Untapped Cities writer Vicky Kalpaxis, who has written about many of New York City’s secrets, from a tattoo parlor with replica subway cars to the Secrets of Fordham University, along with the opening of many new literary gems in the city.
Hometown: Albany, NY
What’s your current gig? I’m a full-time student at Fordham University majoring in English and Journalism!
What’s your favorite “untapped” spot in the city? The top floor of The Shops at Columbus Circle leaning on the built-in ledge, staring at the hustle and bustle of the city beyond the glass wall.
What places are on your NYC bucket list? The Hard Hat Tour of Ellis Island!
Last trip taken: Visiting family in Kalamata, Greece!
Where do you want to visit next? I would love to study abroad in London or Milan
Favorite mode of transportation: Definitely the subway although it can be hit or miss at times…
What makes New York City great to you? I love that there are so many people constantly around me with different stories. The person I’m sitting next to on the subway could have the same favorite book as me and I would never know. The person behind me in line for coffee could have the most interesting story and I’ll never know unless I ask.
What would you change about New York City? I think everyone wishes it was cleaner.
Favorite piece you’ve written for Untapped Cities: “10 of NYC’s Oldest Libraries and Their Secret Histories”
Book you’re reading: Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly
Last Movie or Show you watched: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tell us one surprising thing about yourself? My full name is “Vasiliki” which translates to “royalty” in Greek!
If you could go back in time, which time period of New York City would you like to be in? I know the 1920’s are a cliché response, but it was the era in which woman gained the right to vote and I would love to be a part of that movement. I also love the artists of that era!
What is the last thing in New York City that stopped you in your tracks? Watching two costumed characters (Elmo and Batman) argue in Times Square.
Favorite fun fact about New York City? It would take 24 hours to travel the entire subway system, as it would stretch from NYC to Chicago.
What’s the last thing you took a photo of? The Lit. Bar in Mott Haven!
