Over the course of his life, sculptor Chaim Gross collected and created hundreds of works of art. Though Gross passed away in the 1990s, his priceless collection of artwork remains largely as he left it inside his Greenwich Village home. Gross and his wife moved into the 1830s townhouse at 526 LaGuardia Place in 1963 and converted it into a home, adding a custom-designed sculpture studio as well. If you are an Untapped Cities Insider, you can see where Gross lived and worked on a special tour of the Gross home and studio. Not an Insider yet? On this tour Insiders will gain access to the third floor living and dining spaces which are filled with hundreds of works from Gross’ extensive private art collection. Pieces featured in the Gross home include important American paintings by artists like Marsden Hartley, Willem De Kooning, and Milton Avery, as well as African, Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, and European works as well. All together, including Gross’ own sculptures, drawings, and prints, photographic archive and his personal art collection, there are 10,000 in the home.

The Chaim Gross home and studio is now run by the Renee and Chaim Gross Foundation, a not-for-profit organization established 1988. The Foundation opened to the public in 1994 and in 2009 has organized original exhibitions both onsite and at local and national venues on Chaim Gross and the history of American art, and allowed visitors into the Gross living spaces on the third floor. The Foundation also hosts public lectures and readings by major contemporary writers, poets and scholars.
