From abandoned subway tunnels and sewers in New York City to exotic buried cities and sacred caves, author Will Hunt has explored them all. In his new book Underground: A Human History of the Worlds Beneath Our Feet, Hunt takes readers on an adventure through the hidden wonders that lie below us as he travels along with other “subterraneaphiles” who have dedicated themselves to investigating underground worlds. Among the sites Hunt has explored are the the catacombs and sewers of Paris, a 35,000-year-old mine in the Australian outback, and a sacred sculpture molded by Paleolithic artists in a cave in the Pyrenees. On July 30th, hear Hunt’s tales firsthand as he sits down with Untapped Cities founder Michelle Young to examine our connection to spaces underground in a book talk at the Brooklyn Historical Society.
