When it was built in 1927, the stunning Temple Emanu-El was the largest synagogue in the world. Designed by Jewish architects in a bold Romanesque-revival style, the stately structure on New York City’s Upper East Side seats more people than St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Inside the temple, which is home to a Reform Jewish Congregation, there are decorative elements of Byzantine, Moorish and Art Deco styles from the shimmering 8-story high mosaic covered arch to the gorgeous stained glass windows filled with symbols of Judaism. If you are an Untapped Cities Insiders, you can join us for a free docent led tour of the temple’s sanctuary and museum on August 8th! In addition to learning about the beautifully ornate interiors, you will also get to explore the artifacts housed inside the Herbert & Eileen Bernard Museum of Judaica.
