8. Explore an Abandoned Hospital

Explore New York City’s history of immigration from a different perspective, the abandoned hospital complex on the south side of Ellis Island. On Untapped Cities’ Behind-the-Scenes Hard Hat tour, guests will gain entry into the 29-building hopsital compound that has been closed to the public for over sixty years.

Guests will get to go into areas such as the laundry facility, contagious disease wards, morgue and more. Spread throughout the complex you will see the art installation Unframed, a series of life-sized historical images pulled from the Ellis Island archives. In addition to learning about the immigrant experience at the hospital, you will also learn about the other ways in which the hospital facilities were used, such as for an FBI field office and as a U.S. Coast Guard training facility.
