Untapped Cities is excited to announce our September lineup of special events for Untapped Cities Insiders. Every month, Insiders get to explore New York City through free, exclusive behind-the-scenes tours and exciting events hosted by the city’s leading cultural institutions, like our partners at the New York Public Library, The Museum of the City of New York and the Brooklyn Historical Society. Recently, Insiders got to hold an Emmy on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Paley Center, meet the horses and drivers of the historic Yonkers Raceway inside the paddock, learned about the World’s Fair and toured the Panorama of the City of New York at the Queens Museum, and went inside Gracie Mansion. In September, upcoming events include visits to urban farms, a walking tour of DUMBO’s historic buildings, a food tour of the Bronx Night Market and more! September 6th – Ice Cream Tasting and Urban Farm Tour

Urby and the historic Staten Island ice cream parlor Egger’s Ice Cream have just revealed their first collaboration: Green Dream, a one-of-a-kind homemade ice cream flavor available only at Eggers’ pop up location at Staten Island Urby. Made from ingredients grown at Staten Island Urby’s one-of-a-kind on-site 5,000 square foot urban farm and evolving throughout the season as new crops come to harvest, Green Dream is infused with bold flavors like basil and other micro-greens. Untapped Cities Insiders will have the opportunity to tour Urby’s farm with Olivia Gamber, the Rabbit’s Garden’s current farmer-in-residence, and hear about the unique collaboration, as well as take part in an ice cream social to try the cool, fresh flavor that makes the perfect treat on a hot summer’s day and is made fresh in-house.

September 8th – Explore the Permanent Collections of the New York Historical Society on a Guided Tour

The New York Historical Society is New York’s oldest museum and Untapped Cities Insiders are invited inside to explore its collections. Established in 1804, the museum has amassed an extensive array of artifacts related to the history and culture of New York. From children’s toys to pieces of infrastructure, the permanent collections of the museum tell the story of the evolution of our city and state. On this tour, Insiders will get an in-depth look at highlights from the permanent collections with guidance from an expertly trained museum docent.

September 9th – Experience “Machine Hallucinations” at an Art Space Below Chelsea Market

Be one of the first to experience Machine Hallucinations, the debut exhibition of ARTECHOUSE New York, a brand new digital art space inside the boiler room of Chelsea Market, beneath the main concourse. Taking up 6,000-square-feet of previously unused space inside the former Nabisco headquarters, the cutting-edge space will show work from new media artists using the most advance technology available. The first show to open will be Machine Hallucinations, a mind-bending immersive experience by acclaimed digital artist Refik Anadol. Anadol used artificial intelligence and 300 million photographs of New York City to create an immersive visual experience that shows you the familiar city sights in a whole new way.

September 10th – Explore NYC’s First Art Deco Skyscraper, The New York Telephone Building

Largely considered the first Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, the Ralph Walker designed New York Telephone Building is a treasure trove of early 20th-century design. Once inside the “wedding cake” shaped building which dates to 1927, you are first stunned by the ornately decorated lobby. The expansive space boasts a vaulted ceiling covered in murals depicting the evolution of communication, intricate gilded accents, and a decorative tiled floor. While half of the building is owned by Verizon, the other half has been converted into condominiums by Magnum Real Estate Group and CIM Group. Untapped Cities Insiders are invited inside One Hundred Barclay to explore the stunning Art Deco features and see the new residences within on a special tour.

September 12th – Ballparks and Our Changing City

What can New York’s ballparks – from the gone-but-not-forgotten Ebbets Field to today’s reimagined Yankee Stadium and Citi Field – tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger, author of the new book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City, sits down with author Kevin Baker at the Museum of the City of New York to discuss the connection between the physical transformation of New York’s ballparks and America’s changing attitudes toward cities and shared civic space, past and present. This program accompanies the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibition In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson: An Intimate Portrait of a Baseball Legend (on view through September 22, 2019).

September 14th – Food Tour of the Bronx Night Market

The Bronx Night Market hit the New York City food scene last summer and returned to Fordham Plaza this year. Running every Saturday from August to October, the market is the largest celebration of cuisine and culture in The Bronx, featuring more than fifty food, drink and artisan vendors. The diverse food and beverage offerings include beer from Bronx Brewery, vegan dishes, seafood, fried food and everything in between. Untapped Cities Insiders are invited to indulge in a curated sampling of some of the best bites the Night Market has to offer while touring the market and meeting its founder Marco Shalma.

September 17th – Explore an Abandoned Shooting Range and Hidden Veterans Museum Inside the Park Slope Armory

On this members-only Untapped Cities Insiders tour, discover two mythic locations inside the historic Park Slope Armory: an abandoned shooting range underground once used by the 14th Regiment of the New York State militia, nicknamed as the ”Red Legged Devils” during the Civil War and a hidden Veterans Museum that Untapped Cities featured in the book Secret Brooklyn. At this visit, Insiders will get to meet Tom Miskel, a Park Slope resident and veteran of the Vietnam War who has been working on the multi-room museum, which is chock full of artifacts from the many wars fought by the United States. Miskel will give a brief introduction of the spaces and then led us into the hidden rooms! You’ll not only be able see two of the shooting ranges, but also a Victorian-era waiting room where the soldiers would wait their turn.

September 18th – Historic Buildings of DUMBO Walking Tour

Join Brooklyn Historical Society and Alloy Development to discover some of the most historic buildings in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood. We’ll start at 168 Plymouth, a new residential development by Alloy inside two iconic DUMBO buildings, where we will hear from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s Nalleli Guillen. Guillen is a historian and Project Manager of the Revealing Long Island History Project who will talk about the history of the neighborhood and specifically the history of the two buildings that make up 168 Plymouth. The two structures were built for Masury & Sons Paintworks in 1891 and 1921 and served as storage and manufacturing. After Guillen’s brief talk, Insiders will walk through the 168 Plymouth to see its secret garden courtyard and some of the new residential spaces. The property is made up forty-six homes, a mix of townhouses, brick and timber lofts, daylight lofts and penthouses. Insiders will then stop outside two more Alloy properties in the neighborhood to cap off the tour.

September 20th – Explore the Urban Farm at Randall’s Island Park

Located at the southern end of Randall’s Island visitors will find a 40,000square foot, environmentally-sustainable farm. The Urban Farm at Randall’s Island Park is composed of 100 raised beds, two greenhouses, four rice paddies (the only paddies in New York City), an outdoor kitchen, and an integrated compost bin that is fed by a solar-powered forced-air system. Untapped Cities Insiders are invited to the farm to discover the many fruits and vegetables that are growing there including eggplant, edamame, kohlrabi, kale, lemon sorrel, cucamelon and more! The tour will be led by an experienced Urban Farmer who will be able to answer any questions you may have while walking through the farm.

September 23rd – Tour the American Merchant Marine Academy Museum

The American Merchant Marine Museum at Kings Point preserves, displays, and interprets historic artifacts and artwork related to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine, and the profession of seafaring. Housed inside the Barstow Estate, a Long Island Gold Coast mansion next to the Merchant Marine Academy was built in the 1920s for William S. Barstow, the first Mayor of Kings Point and a colleague of Thomas Edison. The Museum is used to educate midshipmen and the public and to instill an appreciation for the significant contributions made by the maritime services to the nation’s heritage. On this special lunchtime tour, Untapped Cities Insiders will have the museum entirely to ourselves as it will be closed to the public. Before or after the tour you are encouraged to enjoy a picnic on the grounds overlooking the Long Island Sound.

September 24th – Tour the Architectural Studio of CetraRuddy

Untapped Cities and 6sqft are reprising our series of architectural studio tours. The next firm we will explore in the series is CetraRuddy, the team behind projects such as Fotografiska New York and the Lincoln Square Synagogue. On this tour, Insiders will see the spaces where the ideas of architects come to life and learn about some of the firm’s current projects. Led by principals at the firm, you will stop by stations throughout the office that illustrate the integration of architecture and interiors, technology, sustainability and resiliency. The tour will end with a Q&A.

September 27th – Take a Ride on the John J. Harvey Fireboat

Hop aboard the John J. Harvey Fireboat for a special ride with stunning vantage views of the New York City skyline. Untapped Cities Insiders and students from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) (who are studying a site in the South Bronx) will be special guests of the boat owner. On our journey we will be covering about 75% of the Manhattan coastline, leaving from the fireboat’s berth at Pier 66 in Hudson River Park and going all the way up to the Bronx via the East River.

For much of the last year, the John J. Harvey was painted in a red and white DAZZLE camouflage pattern, a work of art by Tauba Auerbach for the Public Art Fund. The fireboat went into the shipyard for a fresh coat of red paint in August, so you’ll be seeing it as close to its original glory as possible! Architect and historic preservationist Huntley Gill, who graduated from Columbia GSAPP and was one of the four on the 9/11 crew, is the founder and trustee for the organization created to save the John J. Harvey. He will be captaining the John. J Harvey during our trip.
