Guy: “So where in the Lower East Side do you live?” Girl: “Do you know where Katz’s is?” Guy: “Like the musical?” That exchange is one of the many gems you will find on the @OverheardNewYork Instagram, a profile full of content sourced “everywhere from hipster cafes, to vegan restaurants, nightclubs, and your local goat yoga class.” Now, the popular digital brand is going back to print with the Overheard Post NY. Overheard Post NY is the physical manifestation of the Instagram profile, a newspaper featuring all of the best of New York culture. This publication of this one-time edition will be celebrated with the first-ever Overheard Newsstand in the heart of Union Square. For two days only, free copies of the newspaper will be available alongside items from beloved New York City coffee and food spots at the pop-up newsstand.

In Union Square on Thursday morning, newsies shouted “Digital is Dead!” while handing out free copies of the Overheard NY Post. Coming out of the subway station, commuters stopped by the newsstand to grab a free cup of coffee or kombucha while perusing the paper. “@OverheardNewYork was the second account we created under the Overheard umbrella and is one of two accounts, the other being @overheardla, with over 1 million followers, so it felt like it deserved its own activation. I’m actually from New York and lived here a lot of my life, and I’ve always noticed that while it’s a difficult time for many newspapers around the world, New York City remains a city of the newspaper with iconic outlets like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and New York Post that New Yorkers still consider an integral part of their daily ritual. Newspaper culture is rich in New York, so launching Overheard Post felt like a challenge to make the newspaper work as well here as it did in LA this past spring. It felt like the appropriate next step for us,” said Overheard founder Jesse Margolis.

For the next two days, the newsstand will offer custom-branded Overheard swag and products from New York companies like La Colombe, Health Ade, Labo, Sakara Life, and Williamsburg Pizza. Margolis also told us that “thirty “newsies” will roam the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan until Saturday to interact with New Yorkers and hand out newspapers.” Throughout the month of October, you can pick up a free copy of the paper at local hotspots throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, including Moxy Hotels, Bonberi, Freehold Brooklyn, and The Wing.

The New York based newspaper features all of the best (and hilariously worst!) of New York culture and comes after the successful launch of the brand’s first physical newspaper in Los Angeles this past spring. Inside, readers will find a millennial weather report detailing Earth’s “current mood,” horoscopes, subway chronicles and more. Overheard Newsstand will be open today, Thursday, October 17th until 8:00PM and Friday, October 18th from 8AM to 8PM.
