This past weekend, the American Kennel Club hosted their annual Meet the Breeds event at the Jacob Javits Center. Founded in 1884, the American Kennel Club started out as a group of twelve dedicated sportsmen who each represented a dog club that had held a benched dog show or had run field trials. Now they’re one of the most recognized and trusted organizations in breed, health, and training information for dogs, and they actively advocate for responsible dog ownership and the advancement of dog sports.
During Meet the Breeds, pet lovers were given the opportunity to meet and play with over 200 different dog breeds (including newly recognized breeds like the Barbet) like in booths individually decorated to depict each breed’s country of origin and historical purpose/function, all while learning about responsible pet ownership and which breeds may be right for them. There were also several different cat breeds thanks to the International Cat Association.
In addition to meeting different dog and cat breeds, dog lovers could visit the all-new Puppy Pack Park, which was set up to replicate a dog park that includes a designated off-leash area where puppies play. Visitors could walk around in the park to pet many dogs who were on-leash with their owners. There were also several vendors dedicated to providing accessories for your furry friend or you.
