Yesterday, we shared the many drive-in movie theaters that still exist all over New York State and are reopening this weekend, included in the activities permitted under the phased re-opening of New York State. But New York City now has its own: the Bel Aire Diner in Astoria, Queens has transformed its parking lot into a drive-in theater! There have been two screenings, Dirty Dancing this past Wednesday and Grease on May 7th. The popularity of the first event led to a double feature this past week.

People who reserved in advance can drive into the Bel Aire Diner parking lot, which wraps around the establishment located on Broadway and 21st Street in Queens. Food, drinks and popcorn are served from a special “Drive-In Menu” which includes dish names inspired by the film. For Dirty Dancing, one dish was called “I’ve Had the Time of My Life…” and “nobody Puts Baby in the Corner!”

Future drive-in movie theater events at Bel Aire Diner will be announced on their social media channels, with no current dates announced yet as they need to plan for the weather. They write on Instagram, “Hey, we are hoping to do more shows in the future. Please stay tuned on social media for for all the details. There will be no waiting lists and tickets will all be sold through our website. Unfortunately we cannot plan too far ahead because of weather conditions.” The Bel Aire website says they will be planning dates two weeks at a time. So stay tuned!
