For a number of eager and excited couples frantically planning for their upcoming weddings, dreams were shattered as social gatherings were called off due to coronavirus restrictions. With wedding plans canceled, couples have been looking for creative ways to say “I do” without jeopardizing their of their families’ health. Luckily for many couples, the wedding service “I Do Drive Thru” that allows couples to get married in their car, launched in New York last week. “Stressed couples are looking for a ‘no fuss, no muss’ situation right now,” said local officiant Aretha Gaskin. “I think they’ll love the simplicity of it all.”

I Do Drive Thru began on April 8, 2020 in Australia and has since expanded to New York, New Jersey, and Las Vegas. Starting from $400, couples select a location throughout New York City, from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Brooklyn Museum, and an officiant arrives at the vehicle before vows are exchanged inside the car. Paperwork is passed in and out of car windows, and rings are exchanged from the back seat. These socially distanced weddings can even happen right outside the couple’s home for a familiar romantic backdrop. The flexibility in location allows newlyweds with medical conditions to celebrate with little risk. In the case of a total lockdown, I Do Drive Through will fully refund the event.

In addition to the normal 20-minute service, I Do Drive Thru also offers additional features like wedding photography and videography. These ceremonies can also be livestreamed on the company’s website for friends and family to see, and I Do Drive Thru has partnered with car-hire companies to be a more accessible service for couples.

“Even in a time of uncertainty love still exists and people still need to celebrate,” Australian Celebrant and Entrepreneur Mel Jacob said. “There is still every reason to commit to marriage. Imagine looking back on COVID 2020 with the fond memory of getting married in this unique way, then having the big celebration with family and friends to look forward to, down the track.”
