Today, Machine Hallucination: NYC, a 30-minute immersive experimental cinema experience, re-opens at ARTECHOUSE — the first innovative arts organization dedicated to the intersection of art, science, and technology. ARTECHOUSE NYC’s inaugural exhibition, it attracted over 100,000 visitors in its first showing. The revamped version is hosted in collaboration with Refik Anandol, an award-winning media artist and pioneer in the aesthetics of machine intelligence, and Nifty Gateway, an online digital art auction platform.

Presented in 16K resolution inside a digital art space in Chelsea Market‘s former boiler room, Machine Hallucination visualizes New York’s story hidden deep within the city’s consciousness. Rather than telling the story of New York today, the installation looks towards what may come for the city in the future, presenting a hopeful vision of the relationship between machine and man. Overall, Machine Hallucination works to challenge its audience’s capacity to dream, helping us all to envision things that we otherwise cannot see or imagine.

In the words of Anandol: “Machine Hallucinations emerged from our Studio’s ongoing research into a new understanding of data aesthetics based on collective visual memories of space, nature, and urban environments. It offers an alternative way of imagining the future of cinema and post-digital architecture in relation to the possibilities of neural networks, immersive environments, and machine learning.”

Through its groundbreaking usage of the latest technologies and artificial intelligence, Machine Hallucination: NYC offers its viewers a never-before-seen experience. Compiling more than 100 million publicly available photos of New York’s most iconic architecture and urban landscape, without people as a distraction, the installation creates a cinematic data universe of the city’s collective memories.

The opening of Machine Hallucination: NYC will be paired with the launching of XR Bar for the first time, allowing guests to enjoy XR cocktails while immersing themselves in the world of the exhibition.  Each drink is powered by the ARTECHOUSE app, featuring augmented reality work inspired by the exhibition. In addition, visitors at Machine Hallucination: NYC will have the opportunity of being able to purchase exhibition-based experiential non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from a collection of more than 1,000 options — each uniquely composed by Anandol and solely available on site.
