Curator-Led Tour of Funk You Too!
The Funk Art movement began on the West Coast in the 1960s. It sprang from a group of artists who shared anti-establishment views of what makes “good art.” These artists found new ways to use clay and sculpture as a tool of f critique and satire. In the exhibit, visitors will see works by some of the earliest Funk Art creators such as Robert Arneson, Viola Frey, Patti Warashina, and Howard Kottler.
Guest curated by Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, Funk You Too! brings together work by artists from different generations and different countries across the globe. In the exhibit, you’ll see pieces from Diana Yesenia Alvarado (US, b. 1992), Didi Rojas (Colombia, b. 1993), Salvador Jiménez-Flores (Mexico, b. 1985), Maija Peeples-Bright (Latvia, b. 1942), Peter VandenBerge (Netherlands, b. 1935) and many others.
These diverse perspectives show the evolution of humor, subversion, and expressive figuration and how a new generation of artists is carrying on the legacy of the Funk Art movement. Funk You Too! will be on view through August 27, 2023.
Tickets for Untapped New York’s behind-the-scenes tour will be available to book on Saturday, June 24th at 12:00 pm ET. On that date, you can register for your spot here!
