Lost Gilded Age Mansions are Rebuilt with Plants at NYBG Holiday Train Show®
The demolished Clark and Vanderbilt mansions are among a handful of lost NYC buildings resurrected at this festive holiday display!
What makes a real New Yorker? The amount of years you’ve lived in the city? A fast-paced walk? Or something more intangible? In our upcoming virtual talk with NYC-based, award-winning German journalists Christina Horsten and Felix Zeltner, we’ll discuss what it means to call yourself a New Yorker. In this multi-media discussion, we’ll hear from New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs and we want to hear your thoughts too!
Christina and Felix have a unique perspective on the subject not just as transplants, but as New York City dwellers who spent an entire year neighborhood-hopping through Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Moving from a loft in Long Island City to a house in St. George then a townhouse in Mott Haven and an apartment in DUMBO, by the end of the year, they had lived in 17 different neighborhoods. They also collected interviews with a diverse array of their temporary neighbors.

The same week their first daughter Emma was born, Christina and Felix lost their beloved first Manhattan apartment. It led them on a wild hunt and eventually, they decided to embark on a real-time experiment: living in a different New York City neighborhood every month, for one year. While rough at the outset, their year of moving turned into a life-changing experience – and eventually led not only to a new home, but also to a bestselling book, Stadtnomaden (The Urban Nomads), published in Germany, and most recently, a unique, road trip-style audiobook, Hallo New York.
Since embarking on their grand tour of New York City, Christina and Felix have become parents of two daughters, and found a more stable place to live, near the Museum of Natural History on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
In this virtual talk moderated by Untapped New York’s founder Michelle Young, you’ll hear about Christina and Felix’s unconventional adventure while viewing photographs and listening to interview clips from some of the memorable characters in their communities. You’ll meet the Central Park barber, Bushwick’s favorite Hebrew rapper, and the Tofu heir of Chinatown, among others. Join us on January 17th to hear from New Yorkers across the city and to share your own thoughts on what makes a New Yorker!
