Saturday, July 13th – Abandoned Hospital Hard Hat Tour

Explore buildings usually off-limits to the public on a hard hat tour of the abandoned hospital on the island’s lesser-traveled south side. In partnership with Save Ellis Island, this tour grants you access to spaces that have been closed off for decades including an autopsy theater, contagious disease wards, and laundry facilities. Learn about the immigrants who passed through and discover what the 29-building complex was used for after the hospital shut down.

Learn about the history of New York City’s North and South Brother Islands on a sunset cruise narrated by an expert urban naturalist! For decades, these islands have been taken over by nature and now serve as a sanctuary for shorebirds. As you search for Black Crowned Night Herons among the crumbling ruins, you’ll uncover stories of a 19th-century quarantine hospital, the former summer estate of an early Yankees owner that met a fiery end, and more mysteries of the islands on the East River.

Join artist Tobi Kahn for an exclusive after-hours tour of his new exhibit, Memory and Inheritance, at the Museum at Eldridge Street! Kahn’s first show in his hometown of New York City in a decade, this exhibit features nearly 50 works of art and ceremonial objects. See a series of Kahn’s famous Sky and Water paintings, photographs of his large scale sculptures throughout the nation, and artistic interpretations of ceremonial objects like a baby naming chair, mezuzah, Omer counter, and more.

Adam Memorial Hospital, and more locations featured in his book A Vanishing New York: Ruins Across the Empire State.
