On October 4th, The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and the Nicotra Group announced the groundbreaking of a new 330,000-square-foot, LEED-certified office building, Corporate Commons Three, located on Staten’s Island Teleport Campus. This new office structure will create 2,500 new jobs, supporting Mayor de Blasio’s initiative to expand office districts across all boroughs.
The new office building will allocate its space to several ventures. Twenty percent of the Corporate Commons Three will be for medical office tenants. In addition, the building will also contain a charter school and space for continuing adult education. There are also plans for a vineyard and a social enterprise Italian restaurant, which has committed to donating all of its profits to charities across Staten Island.
The building will be devoted to environmental causes, the NYCEDC has announced, as an organic rooftop farm will be focused on honey production and a temporary nursery will be established during construction to foster indigenous plants and native trees which will then replanted on the property’s grounds.
“The new Corporate Commons Three will not only be an innovative, energy efficient building, it will also help create thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenue and confirms Richard and Lois Nicotra’s commitment to philanthropy and responsible corporate citizenship,” said City Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo.
The Nicotra Group currently owns Commons One and Two on the “Job Coast,” and Commons Three will offer these tenants the opportunity to expand while also welcoming in new businesses.
“Today is a literal groundbreaking, but we’re confident that this is a groundbreaking moment for our borough as we encourage businesses, medical practices and schools to ‘Outsmart Manhattan’ and look to Staten Island for more amenities while paying less rent,” said Lois and Richard Nicotra of the Nicotra Group on October 4th.
Staten Island’s Teleport Campus was established as an economic development project in the 1980s, and this development of the West Shore remains an essential part of the job creation strategy for the borough and city.
