How to Make a Subway Map with John Tauranac
Hear from an author and map designer who has been creating maps of the NYC subway, officially and unofficially, for over forty years!
The Rockefeller Christmas Tree is out and a giant peacock is in at the Rockefeller Center. Looking reminiscent of the many topiary flower sculptures by Jeff Koons that have sat in this very spot, the peacock is actually a promotional installation for NBC’s new streaming service, Peacock TV.
NBC is the latest to launch a standalone streaming service, alongside competitors like Disney+, Apple TV, and the original deal, Netflix. But there is one major difference: it’s going to be free, and supported by ads (with the option to do an ad-free plan low price per month). Peacock TV will be providing content not only from NBC Universal (which includes USA Network, SyFy, Bravo, Telemundo and Universal Kids) but also Lionsgate and Starz. You’ll find classic shows like The Office, Friday Night Lights, and Parks and Recreation, and new original content like the new Battlestar Gallactica series.
The peacock, made of blue flowers and green shrubbery, was being installed today and Untapped New York Insider member Robyn Roth-Moise snapped these photographs. The lights were being tested Wednesday night, and as of Thursday morning, it had been lit up. Peacock TV will be shown at an investor meeting tomorrow, and said to be launching to the public in April 2020. For now, you can hashtag #PeacockTV or follow the account on Twitter in anticipation (“Hatching soon” the account cover image proclaims).
