Olympics fever has hit town, gaining the attention of everyone in New York City, and the candy makers of the Upper East Side are no exception. To celebrate the Olympics kickoff on Friday night, The London Candy Co. and the Drury Lane online bakery co-hosted a private pop-up candy event at the London Candy Co. store on Lexington Ave. It was perhaps the perfect location to host such an event; after all, the entire store was already covered with British-inspired decorations, from a red telephone booth to Union Jacks on candy tins.

The Drury Lane crew also provided delicious English treats, like the eton mess and sticky toffee pudding, while Bulldog Gin sponsored drinks, all to the tune of $30 per entry.  Drury Lane was started just over a year ago by Katherine Sacks and Katzie Guy-Hamilton, two  bakers who have a strong affiliation with London, having had the chance to travel there frequently.  Drury Lane in England is not just where the Muffin Man lives in the popular nursery rhyme, but is also the birthplace of one of the co-founders, Katzie.  The duo have done similar pop-up events all over the country, as well as private catering, with plans to eventually open a store. The online bakery certainly impressed with their variety of desserts and appetizers; keep an eye out for them in the near future.

Katzie, who lives in the building right above the London Candy Co, came up with the idea of collaborating with the boutique British confectioner for the Olympics kick-off night.  The entire event was pretty casual, with friends popping in every few minutes. Guests mingled, ate and drank, and most seemed to have come from the same social circle. When the Olympics opening ceremony started screening, everyone gathered around the large television at the bar to watch and cheer.

The wonderful thing about the Games is its ability to gather everyone, so take the opportunity this season to bond with friends, family or acquaintances, in the spirit of the Olympics. Happy Olympics watching!
