At Untapped, we just can’t get enough of over-the-top theatrical food events. Last month we covered 41 °North, 49 °West, the spectacular recreation of the last supper on the Titanic, orchestrated by Jonathan Cristaldi and chefs Rob McCue and Adam Banks. On June 3rd, Underground Eats, the latest source for alternative dining experiences in NYC officially launches (and they mean “alternative” in the truest sense of the word). The inaugural festivities will be a 1939 World’s Fair-themed event at Sleep No More’s the McKittrick Hotel. They’ve partnered with Chef Marc Murphy (Benchmarc, Ditch Plains) to produce “absurdist” gastronomy and the night promises theatricality to the tune of a Dali-inspired madhouse. In line with Sleep No More, no two experiences at Absurdity at the McKitrick Hotel will be alike and Surrealism will be the guiding mantra. There will be interactive, theatrical, moving food stations. There will be mysterious men in black robes carrying a suckling pig on a silver tray. Actors will be dressed in period costume.
Culinary-wise, highlights will include beef Tartar cubes on chickpea cakes with horseradish powder, charcuterie stations, and we’re told lobster will make a “bold appearance.” Classic cocktails will be infused with absinthe and champagne.
Untapped Cities will be on hand to document it all, so stay tuned for a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation of Absurdity and the movable feast itself.
