Andrew Berman, Executive Director of Village Preservation will be joined in conversation by Carl Raymond, host of The Gilded Gentleman history podcast.  Andrew will discuss his career in historic preservation over the past 22 years.  He will share several case studies of projects that have met with success as well as challenges in the preservation of Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. In addition, Andrew will discuss some of the issues facing historic preservation in the current environment, as well as some simple yet deeply powerful actions passionate local preservationists can do to make a difference.

About the Speakers:

Carl Raymond is the host of The Gilded Gentleman history podcast which is produced by Bowery Boys Media and has listeners in  74 countries worldwide. Carl is a specialist in the culture and social history of the Gilded Age and has lectured widely for a number of organizations and groups including the Metropolitan Opera Guild, the Royal Oak Foundation, the English-Speaking Union, Edith Wharton's Home/The Mount and Village Preservation.  He has presented Gilded Age programs for a number of clubs including the Harvard Club, the Penn Club, the National Arts Club, the Lotos Club, and the Coffee House Club. Andrew Berman has served as Executive Director of Village Preservation, a community-based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the special architectural and cultural heritage of Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo, since 2002. In that time he has led the organization in successful efforts to secure landmark designation of over 1,250 buildings, including groundbreaking designations honoring LGBTQ+, African-American, immigrant, and artistic and countercultural history. An architectural historian, he has also worked extensively in the fields of tenant and housing advocacy as well as cultural preservation, particularly for underrepresented groups.
